The Washington Electric Vehicle Instant Rebates program launched on August 1, 2024. Income-eligible drivers received up to $9,000 in instant rebates on the lease or $5,000 on the purchase of a new qualifying electric vehicle (EV). Used EVs received $2,500. The instant rebate was applied as a discount by participating dealerships or automakers at the time of lease or purchase. Here are the 2024 results:
increase in EV sales during program period
(7% increase in annual sales)

federal money brought into the state
in benefits for every $1 spent
Public programs should be easy to access. That’s why Washington Electric Vehicle Instant Rebates offered point-of-sale discounts applied “on-the-hood” by 249 active dealers. That meant less wasted time and administrative costs for burdensome paperwork and more program funding for rebates.

Thanks to Washington’s relatively affordable electricity, EV users save an average of $0.16 per mile—adding up to $1,571 in annual savings for the average driver. But EVs are still priced about $4,000 to $6,000 higher than gasoline options, making it harder for low-income households to access the post-purchase fuel savings. By offering easy-to-access EV instant rebates, the Washington State Department of Commerce helped thousands of low-income households go electric and save money with every mile they drive.

Passenger vehicles are the single largest contributor to carbon emissions in Washington, making up more than 25% of the economy’s energy use. The program makes it possible for all households to afford zero-emission transportation, helping their families and neighbors breathe cleaner air and avoid climate change costs.
